Blood is one of the most powerful and ubiquitous of human symbols. It signifies life and death, health and disease, power and powerlessness. This project seeks to explore the tension between blood as the subject of rational scientific investigation and blood as a disturbing, arcane and uncontrollable substance. From a heart surgeon to a cytogeneticist, to red coral and the Queen, its selected subjects are presented as a ‘cabinet of curiosities’, designed to restore a sense of wonder and horror to the ways in which we have come to understand and view blood. By virtue of its subject, the book is not a comprehensive account, but rather an exploration of some of its rich veins.
